12. Juliana Seeks Nazi Asylum
Episode 2, “The Road Less Traveled”
Disclaimer: I avoided all press for this show, so I did not see this moment on the trailer for Season 2.
Nonetheless, Juliana’s decision to seek asylum at the German embassy in San Francisco resulted from an intense set of circumstances. Juliana fled the Resistance members that she once fought alongside in Season 1. Additionally, Juliana rushed past the Japanese soldiers just as one soldier recognized Juliana’s face from the warrant issued from the Kempeitai headquarters.
This daring move certainly carried its risks considering Joe may have divulged Juliana’s role in the Resistance while the Nazis no longer may have needed Joe’s film. Juliana tried to ask Tagomi for help, but the Japanese Trade Minister simply could not issue Juliana a diplomatic visa due to the tension in the Pacific States coupled with Juliana’s fugitive status.
In order to protect her family and Frank, Juliana simply had to do the unthinkable. After she delivered her emotional letter that bid her life in San Francisco farewell, Juliana took the next step in her journey to solve the mystery behind the films. Although the trailer spoiled this moment in a sense, the context behind Juliana’s actions make the moment all the more stunning since the world pushed Juliana to the point of no return.
