5. Thomas Sacrifices Himself

Episode 10, “Fallout”

In the most heartbreaking scene of the finale, Thomas essentially ended his life. After he witnessed his father on television be saluted for his loyalty to the Reich, Thomas submitted himself to the Nazi’s department of health services. In a sense, Thomas tried to emulate his father’s loyalty and sacrifice for the Reich. Thomas understood that he had some sort of incurable disease. Therefore, the state deemed him unfit to live because he had a disease that should be cleansed from the human race.

Aside from the tragedy with Thomas, this issue severely affected and tested the marriage of the Smiths. Helen resented John for introducing Thomas’ illness to her bloodline as she mentioned that the Nazi executed John’s brother for having the same illness as Thomas. This arc highlighted another depressing facet of Nazi society and forced viewers to witness a disturbing part of human history.

Overall, Thomas exemplified how the Nazis brainwashed their citizens. Thomas adhered to the laws of the Reich due to his strict upbringing. Juliana’s speech that his flaws made Thomas a unique individual flew over his head. He disobeyed his family and ignored reason completely to sacrifice himself for the Reich in a tragic manner.
