The Danish Girl is based on the true story and romance of Lili Elbe and Gerda Wegener, although it is highly fictionalized. The story focuses on their relationship and fight for transgender individuals.

The novel was a National Bestseller and a New York Times Notable Book, according to Amazon.com.

The film was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Actor in a Leading Role (Eddie Redmayne), Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Alicia Vikander), and two design awards. Alicia Vikander won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.
