In The Martian, Mark Whatney, who is played by Matt Damon in the film, is the first astronaut, or human for that matter, to set foot on Mars. However, after a disaster, Whatney finds himself alone on the planet without a way to return home.
Remarkably, The Martian was originally self-published by Andy Weir in 2011 before a publisher picked up the rights to the novel and re-released it in 2014. We’ve all heard the horror stories of self-publishing, but The Martian is obviously one of the exceptions.
The Martian was nominated for seven Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Actor in a Leading Role (Matt Damon), Best Adapted Screenplay, and more! Unfortunately, The Martian did not win any Oscars.
